Breckinridge Training School holds 2022 all-school reunion

Morehead State University's Office of Alumni Relations and Development recently hosted a reunion for alumni of the Breckinridge Training School at the Breckinridge All-School Reunion during the weekend of June 10-12. More than 200 alumni attended the event and reconnected with former classmates and faculty.

Established in 1924 as a laboratory for teacher training, Breckinridge provided education for K-12 until 1982. Through the loyalty of its alumni, the Breckinridge School Society was created in 1993 to keep the spirit of Breck alive in future generations. The society also established the Breckinridge Commemorative Scholarship Endowment – a scholarship fund that provides generous scholarships to descendants of Breck alumni who choose to attend Morehead State University.

The weekend's premier event included a dinner banquet where the most recent scholarship recipients were recognized, and attendees heard an update on the scholarship endowment, now valued at more than $750,000. In addition, organizers recognized the latest recipient of the George T. Young Award. Presented to individuals who exhibit outstanding service and commitment to the Breckinridge Society and its programming, this year's recipient was John "Skipper" Holley (Breckinridge Class of 1976). A proud Breck graduate who has dedicated years of service to the Breckinridge School Society Board of Governors, Skipper works diligently to maintain and promote the legacy of Breckinridge. The banquet also included remarks from MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan and comments from other Breckinridge alumni.

"This is the seventh All-School Reunion that I've had the privilege to be a part of," said Mindy Highley (MSU Class of 1991, 1993), assistant vice president of Alumni Relations and Development and staff liaison to the Breckinridge School Society. "The loyalty, dedication and camaraderie are just as remarkable this time as it was at the first one. Breck was a model of strong, innovative teaching and highly motivated students. Through the Breckinridge Commemorative Scholarship Endowment that has been funded by alumni from the school, the legacy of Breckinridge has been kept alive by providing educational opportunities to today's students."

The Breckinridge School Society plans and hosts an all-school reunion on MSU's campus every five years. Initially scheduled for 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the event, but the spirit and excitement were worth the wait. The next reunion will resume the original five-year schedule in June 2025.
