Craft Academy’s Josh Day accepted to West Point

Josh Day from Nicholasville, a senior at Morehead State's Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, comes from a military family. His grandfather served in Vietnam, and several of his cousins are in the armed forces. So, it is no surprise that Day too, would be interested in military service. But Day has taken it a step further and is now the first Craft Academy student to be accepted to the United States Military Academy, commonly referred to as West Point.    

Day said he is excited to become a part of West Point's storied history.  

"It allows me to get my undergraduate education and provides me with a guaranteed career in the military immediately following. More than that, though, is the Long Grey Line of graduates before me," Day said. "They were all incredible individuals, and some of our greatest leaders came from West Point: Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and hundreds of others. That's a legacy I want to be a part of. Praise God for giving me the opportunity to pursue that."  

While at the Craft Academy, Day has been a focus group leader, Craft big brother, participated in numerous community service projects, and was a member of the leadership institute, working with Nigerian doctors to help with health issues in that country and help develop a health campaign.  

Day plans to attend medical school and would like to work as a physician in the Army Medical Corps, and he feels attending West Point will help him accomplish that goal.  

"I have wanted to go into the medical field since I was 11. I love all of the sciences, but biology, in particular, is my favorite. As an athlete, learning about my body is exhilarating and has proven useful. Much more than this, though, I want to save lives. That's what the Lord has been calling me to do for years. Being a doctor is my way to be obedient and achieve that goal," Day said. He added that one of the things he's looking forward to at West Point is all the sports and athletic activities the school sponsors.  

"They have a lot of required physical training, but they also have sports. I will be placed in the required boxing and swimming courses, but I will also pursue some of their other sports, like submission grappling, ultimate frisbee and gymnastics. I know that West Point will be challenging, but I look forward to all of it."  

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is a dual-credit academy for academically exceptional Kentucky students. Craft Academy provides students with a postsecondary residential experience to complete their junior and senior high school years by enrolling in college courses. The Craft Academy's purpose is to meet the unique educational needs of the Commonwealth's academically gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors.
