Rowan County Senior High student essays to be featured on 'Mountain Edition'

A locally produced radio news program is featuring the writings of Rowan County Senior High School students this month.

RCSHS Teacher Lindsey Johnson (Class of 2011, 2018) asked her AP English students to participate in the "This I Believe" essay contest for a class assignment. The essays are based on an initiative started in the 1950s by journalist Edward R. Murrow to encourage people to write about their lives and experiences. Murrow would then read the essays on the air. The original initiative by Murrow spawned the This I Believe non-profit organization, founded in 2004.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, the students visited Morehead State Public Radio, WMKY 90.3 FM, and recorded their essays, which air throughout February as part of WMKY's magazine news program, “Mountain Edition.” The show airs weekdays at 5:06 p.m.

"It is always a wonderful opportunity to meet members of the community and show off what we are able to do here at WMKY," said News Director Dr. Leeann Akers (Class of 2006, 2022). "I love hearing their essays, giving them a chance to record them, and building them up, so they know that their opinions matter."
