MSU Concert Choir hosts Chili Cook-Off Dinner and Concert

The MSU Concert Choir is hosting a Chili Cook-Off Dinner and Concert. The event is Tuesday, March 7, at the First Baptist Church, 123 East Main Street in Morehead.

Guests can eat from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with the annual Morehead State University Winter Choral Showcase Concert following at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $8 and may be purchased from choir members or at the door. The dinner will include dessert and a beverage, and proceeds will support future Concert Choir tours. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Chamber Singers, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Black Gospel Ensemble will join Concert Choir for the evening concert. The directors of the ensembles are MSU music professors Dr. Roosevelt Escalante and Dr. Greg Detweiler, and collaborating on the piano is William Murphy, staff accompanist.

Concert Choir will open the concert with multicultural pieces, including "Muusika" from Estonia and the spirituals "Sometimes I Feel" and "Rock-A My Soul." They will also sing "For the Beauty of the Earth" by John Rutter, "Flight Song" by Kim Arnesen, and an arrangement of Dolly Parton's "Light of a Clear Blue Morning."

Chamber Singers will continue in the same vein with the Columbian folksong "Maquerúle" and an arrangement of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'." They will also sing two love madrigals: "O Stay Sweet Love" and "Rest Sweet Nymphs."

Jazz Vocal Ensemble will sing "Never Give Up," "Don't Think It's Easy," and "Ain't Nobody." The concert will conclude with the Black Gospel Ensemble. They will share" Melodies from Heaven," "Speechless," "We've Come to Worship You," and "Revelation 19:1."

Event tickets to the dinner are accessible to anyone who brings a pot of chili and competes. For more information, please email Dr. Greg Detweiler at g.detweiler@moreheadstate.edu or 606-783-2480.
