MSU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers Spring Concert is April 20
The Morehead State University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present a spring concert this month. The event is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at First Baptist Church, 123 East Main Street in Morehead. The concert is the conclusion of their spring tour throughout Kentucky and Ohio. Admission to the show is free and open to the public.
The program entitled "Soaring Over Earth's Beauty" will feature a variety of multicultural and popular selections. The choirs will sing pieces from Estonia, South Africa, Indonesia, Columbia, and Ireland in addition to the familiar spirituals, "Sometimes I Feel" and "Rock-a My Soul." Arrangements of popular songs include Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changing" and Dolly Parton's "Light of a Clear Blue Morning."
The Concert Choir will open and close the program with pieces capturing the concert's theme, "Soaring Over Earth's Beauty." Songs include "Flight Song" by Kim André Arnesen, "Awake the Harp" from Haydn's Creation, "The Heavens are Telling" by Ludwig van Beethoven, and John Rutter's famous anthem, "For the Beauty of the Earth." They will also sing an "Ave Maria" by the African American composer Nathaniel Dett, "Muusika" by the Estonian composer Pärt Uusberg, and "Ukrainian Alleluia" by Craig Courtney.
In addition to the multicultural "Hela Rotan," "Maquerúle," and "Celtic Dance," the Chamber Singers will also perform two English madrigals, "O Stay Sweet Love" by John Farmer and "Rest Sweet Nymphs" by Francis Pilkington.
Soloists during the tour include Elijah Campbell of Flatwoods; Jocelyn Goldy of Morehead; Summer Lighthall of Burlington; Samuel Smittle of Russell; Tess Sergent of Van Lear; Violet Updike of Lexington; Katie Webb of Mt. Sterling; and Sarah White-Jarman of West Union, Ohio. Olivia Hall of Pikeville (flute) and Tanner Prewitt of Mt. Sterling (djembe) are instrumentalists.
MSU music professor Dr. Greg Detweiler conducts the 35-voice Concert Choir and 10-voice Chamber Singers.
"The students and I have enjoyed working on this multicultural-based concert program, and I think it will be a delight for all who attend the concert," he said.
