Model EU Club earns awards at conference
Morehead State University's Model European Union (EU) Club participated in the Midwest Model EU Summit meeting held at Indiana University last month. Ten students from the political science, history, and legal studies programs attended the summit, representing Austria and Bulgaria.
Two members of MSU’s team earned top honors at the summit. Taylor Bishop, a sophomore political science major from Greensburg, won the Outstanding European Commissioner award, while AJ Abdel-Rahman, a senior history major from Elizabethtown, won runner-up for Outstanding Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner.
The Model EU Summit is an annual conference that simulates the functions and decision-making processes of the European Union. More than 200 students from universities across the Midwest attended this year's summit.
"We are extremely proud of our model EU club's performance at the conference," said Dr. James R. Masterson, one of the club's co-advisors and an associate professor of political science. "Under the leadership of the two countries' prime ministers, Nathan Walden and Matthew Grace, the students worked diligently to prepare for the event, and their hard work paid off."
By simulating the functions and decision-making processes of the European Union, the Model EU Club offers students a valuable opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the EU while also honing their skills in drafting resolutions and negotiating their passage.
"The European Union is not well understood, even by those in Europe, so it is a great experience for our students to know about the issues that the EU addresses," said Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Jason M. Adkins, who serves as a co-advisor for the Model EU.
