MSPR adding new programming this month

Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR), 90.3 FM, WMKY, will implement programming changes to offer listeners a wider variety of music programs on weekdays and overnight.

MSPR is adding "Afternoon Blend," which airs Tuesday-Friday from noon to 3 p.m. The locally produced program will feature smooth jazz and adult hits for an upbeat mix of jazz instrumentals, familiar hits, and contemporary sounds from today's singers, songwriters, and musicians.

Host Greg Jenkins (Class of 1996, 2008) will continue to offer popular classical music programming weekday mornings with "Morning Classics" from 9 a.m. to noon. Special features include "90 Second Naturalist," "A Moment of Science," "Morehead State Today," "The Reader's Notebook," and "Word of The Day."

"Morning Classics" will include two weekly classical music programs produced by NPR station WFMT. "The New York Philharmonic" presents recent performances plus selections from archives and commercial recordings. It will air Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. "The WFMT Orchestra Series" spotlights orchestras from across the country and worldwide. It airs on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition, composer and musician Tyler Kline (Class of 2013) hosts "Modern Notebook" on Fridays from 9 to 10 a.m. The program highlights a variety of music that engages and inspires, along with stories behind the music for a journey into contemporary classical music.

As for overnight programming, "The Jazz Network from WFMT" will air Sunday-Thursday, midnight-5 a.m. It offers the finest in traditional jazz and jazz vocalists performing classics from the Great American Songbook. Hosts include vocalist Dee Alexander, jazz experts John Hill and Dave Schwan, and pianist/vocalist Jana Lee Ross.

"It's an opportunity to add new programs while enhancing local programming," said MSPR General Manager Paul Hitchcock (Class of 1988). "We're always looking to enhance our broadcast schedule with programs that are entertaining, informative, and engaging."
