MSU hosts International Engineering Summer Camp

At GEP, 29 students completed hands-on experiences designing and manufacturing drones and microsatellites and professional development workshops on various engineering and business topics. The program ran from July 10 to July 26. Participants enjoyed their stay at MSU, and many of them expressed interest in returning to MSU soon to pursue graduate degrees.

Dr. Jorge Ortega Moody, associate professor of engineering technology, led the GEP. The event was sponsored by the “Beca Embajadores,” a highly competitive scholarship provided by the Querétaro State Government in association with the Polytechnic University of Querétaro, Aeronautic University of Querétaro, and Technological University of San Juan del Río.

“This experience offered a comprehensive curriculum aligned with the participants’ academic background, career aspirations, and the global business and engineering landscapes,” Moody said. “This holistic approach ensured that participants could collaboratively design and execute a business plan for innovative products within the realms of Mechatronics, Space Systems, and Quality and Project Management.”

The academic summer camp included interactive workshops taught by the Department of Engineering Sciences faculty and additional workshops taught by Aaron Hirsch, coordinator of Education Abroad, and Miescha Bycura, instructor of Spanish.

The capstone experience involved designing, building, and testing a Can Sat, a meteorology microsatellite the size of a soda can, and drones. The business and management majors researched and prepared business plans to explore the feasibility and marketing of these devices in Mexico.
