Nick Carter named Superintendent of the Year

Nick Carter HeadshotBreckinridge County Schools Superintendent Dr. Nick Carter (Class of 2018) recently received recognition as one of the best educational leaders in the state.

The Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA) selected Carter as its Superintendent of the Year. Award winners are chosen based on leadership in communication, learning, community involvement and professionalism.

“I am so happy for my school district. This honor doesn't happen without the nearly 500 hardworking Breckinridge County School District employees and 2,700 students," Carter said.

Before becoming superintendent seven years ago, Carter was a Breckinridge County High School principal, social studies teacher, and elementary school teacher. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Kentucky University (WKU), he earned his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from Morehead State University in 2018, where he also serves as an adjunct professor.

Carter learned about MSU's Doctor of Education program after visiting the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science & Mathematics as a high school principal and decided to enroll to advance his career in education. He said the interactions, mentorship, and relationships he received at MSU have benefitted him greatly in his current role.

"My three years in the doctoral program at MSU changed me as a school leader. I learned more about the true definition of servant leadership and how to be more intentional in analyzing complex issues and developing action plans to move forward," Carter said. "Pursuing my doctorate at MSU was one of the best decisions I have made for myself professionally and personally."

Carter said his goal is to be the best version of himself daily as a superintendent. He looks forward to using his position and collaborating with others to make a positive impact on Kentucky's young students.

"Being a part of a team of incredible educators focused on meeting the needs of our students and the long-term needs of our community is one of the parts I love most about my job," he said. "It is a privilege to serve as a superintendent."
