MSPR wins nine Kentucky broadcasting awards

Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR, WMKY, 90.3FM) staff and students took home nine awards in the 2024 Kentucky Broadcasters Association (KBA) Excellence in Broadcasting Awards. The awards recognize the best in television and radio journalism for the calendar year 2023.

KBA presented the Excellence in Broadcasting Awards on Monday, September 30, at Central Bank Center in Lexington at its Annual Membership Conference. KBA awards include professional and college entries.

The professional competition is open to all KBA members in Kentucky and outside Kentucky, with designated market areas that extend into Kentucky. To be eligible to enter, entries must be about news, features or sports that occurred solely in Kentucky. The college competition recognizes Kentucky student broadcasters for outstanding performance in college broadcast journalism. The contest is open to any college in Kentucky.

Radio College Division winners from WMKY:

  • 1st Place – Student Broadcaster of the Year: Hallie Adams (Senior, Media Production & Journalism, Flemingsburg)
  • 1st Place – News Reporter of the Year: Sydney Graham (Senior, Media Production & Journalism, Morehead)
  • 1st Place – Special Program or Feature: Hallie Adams and Kendall Potter (Class of 2023, Traditional Music, Rising Sun, Indiana), - "Bill Clifton, Song Carrier," from Morehead State University's The Trail Blazer
  • 2nd Place – Overall Digital Presence: Anabel Peterman (Class of 2023, Traditional Music, Carlisle)
  • 2nd Place – Special Program or Feature: Caylee Lacey (Senior, Strategic Communications, Williamstown) - "Child Abuse Prevention Month"
  • 2nd Place – News Reporter of the Year: Hallie Adams
  • 2nd Place – Student Broadcaster of the Year: Anabel Peterman

Radio Professional Division winners from WMKY:

  • 1st Place – Overall Newscast/News Coverage: Samantha Morrill (Class of 2016), News Director, WMKY-FM
  • 1st Place – Behind the Scenes: Greg Jenkins (Class of 1996), Operations Director, WMKY-FM

Serving more than 20 counties throughout eastern Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia, Morehead State Public Radio (WMKY) broadcasts at 90.3FM from the MSU campus.
