MSU alum selected for Emergent Educators' Advisory Council
In her first year as a teacher, recent Morehead State University graduate Betty Jones (Class of 2024) is serving on a council to improve education nationally.
The Rural Schools Collaborative (RSC) selected Jones for its Emergent Educators' Advisory Council. This project is an updated platform of the Young Educators Advisory Council, which RSC created to provide a platform to gain feedback from new educators from rural communities.
A Menifee County native, Jones is an 8th-grade social studies teacher and a 9th-grade government teacher at Menifee County High School. She graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Middle Grades Education. She is one of nine educators from various subjects and grade levels on the Emergent Educators' Advisory Council from the RSC Regional Hub Network, which has partners nationwide. They will join the council on a one-year term that runs through the school year, meeting bi-monthly to share experiences, form a professional learning community, and build relationships.
"I had never thought about being on a council like that, but I am excited for the opportunity to learn from other educators," Jones said. "I hope to learn things that I can bring back into the classroom to help my students. I also hope to learn things that I can share with other teachers at my school."
Jones credits her time at MSU with equipping her to be the teacher she is today, whether through completing field experience at different schools or studying abroad at the Busan Foreign School in South Korea. She hopes to use that experience to make a difference on the Emergent Educators' Advisory Council and in teaching in her home community.
"I know that students in my area face a lot of difficulties in their lives. I want to make my classroom a positive place that students want to be at and want to try their best in," she said. "I want to make a positive impact on my students, like my teachers in school did."
