MSU instructor receives prestigious veterinary dentistry award
Off the heels of a #1 state-ranking program, the Morehead State University Department of Agricultural Sciences can add another accolade to its shelf.
Instructor of Veterinary Technology Scott Steele was awarded the Excellence in Dentistry Education this fall.
“Our faculty are truly the best in their profession. We are not just here because it is a paying job,” Steele said. “We are here because we live it every day. We are veterinary junkies that set the example for our students to always be the best we can be in our professional lives.”
The Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians (AVDT) presented the award at the Annual Veterinary Dental Forum (VDF) awards ceremony in Palm Springs, California.
Recipients are nominated by a peer who is an ADVT member and are voted on by the academy.
“He is an advocate of veterinary technician education by teaching Dentistry and Lab Procedures at Morehead State University Vet Tech Program where he is an instructor,” AVDT Committee Chair Katie Holthusen said. “He is a great example of veterinary technicians supporting veterinary technicians.”
Steele says it is an honor to be recognized. However, he adds that the awards are not why he gets involved.
“I live, breathe, and sleep in veterinary medicine, and I absolutely love sharing my years of experience and knowledge with students,” said Steele. "I take a much greater satisfaction out of my student's accomplishments more than I ever will of my own.”
Steele believes moments like this showcase why the program is important.
“Prospective students must know that they are going to get the absolute best education possible for veterinary technology and will be in the highest demand possible once they enter the job market,” Steele said. “Our students have the highest potential ceiling and often go on to achieve similar honors and awards.”
