MSU hosts breakout country band Flatland Cavalry

Morehead State University will host a concert featuring one of country music's hottest up-and-coming bands.

Flatland Cavalry will perform with special guest The Wilder Blue at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Johnson Arena inside the Academic-Athletic Center.

The Texas-based, Americana-country outfit (originally from Lubbock) features lead vocalist/songwriter Cleto Cordero, guitarist Reid Dillon, bassist Jonathan Saenz, drummer Jason Albers, fiddle player Wesley Hall and multi-instrumentalist Adam Gallegos. The band built a fan base touring across Texas before gaining a national following.

After releasing several EPs and albums, Interscope Records signed the group, and it released its first major label album, "Wandering Star," in 2023. Following an appearance on the original motion picture soundtrack for 2023's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" with its song "Wool," the band has continued to write and record.

It recently released "Flatland Forever," a 10-year anniversary collection of new music, unreleased tracks, and its most popular songs, including "Sleeping Alone" and "A Life Where We Work Out" featuring Kaitlin Butts. The band recently reached the top spot on Shazam’s U.S. Top 200 chart after the song “How Long” was featured on Paramount’s hit TV series “Yellowstone.”

Russell Mast, vice president for student affairs, said bringing bands like Flatland Cavalry to campus is part of an overall goal of bringing more concerts to campus.

"They have played at the Railbird Festival and will be performing next year at Bourbon & Beyond next fall," Mast said. "Flatland Cavalry is a very popular group with the college student market."

Tickets go on sale Monday, Jan. 6.
