MSU alum screens documentary on Appalachian Media Institute

Documentary Movie PosterFor 37 years, the Appalachian Media Institute (AMI) has provided a creative outlet for young people to use media to analyze critical issues. Now, a Morehead State alum is helping to tell AMI's story and impact.

Hannah Adams Asbury's (Class of 2020) newest documentary, "Through Their Own Lens," produced in collaboration with MSU and Appalshop, will be screened at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Room 002 in Breckinridge Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Asbury's film highlights AMI's transformative impact on the region and the young, aspiring filmmakers who contributed to its success. Asbury, the communications manager at Appalshop, first interned at AMI at age 17 and graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Convergent Media in 2020. In 2021, she became the lead educator for AMI and later its social media and program manager.

Asbury's film highlights AMI and the beneficial relationship between the institute and the students who bring their vision and message to life through film.

"There are so many untold stories behind the stereotyped image mass media so often paints of central Appalachia," Asbury told MSU's Statement magazine back in 2021. "I hope the Appalachian Media Institute will continue to help young people find a passion for media production and encourage them to capture the stories of central Appalachia with a lens that they control."
