Morehead State hears update on campus construction projects

Morehead State University President Dr. Jay Morgan is leading the University to make, in his words, “a generation leap with our facilities that students can enjoy for years to come.”

A campus revitalization plan is underway to provide new and improved facilities for academic research and laboratories, student support and housing.

At the Board of Regents meeting on Feb. 7, Kim Oatman, associate vice president for capital construction and chief facilities officer, presented updates on the progress of campus projects.

The first of two residence halls, Prefontaine Hall, began construction in October 2024. Completion is set for July 2026 to be ready for occupancy for the fall 2026 semester. A second new residence hall is being designed. Construction will start in July 2025 and be completed in August 2026. This second residence hall will replace Normal Hall.

The new Science & Engineering Building is underway with utility relocation; construction starts in March 2025. It will be completed in April 2027, with plans to open for classes, labs and offices in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028.

The Multidisciplinary Academic Building, which will house music and business programs, is in the programming and design phase. A preliminary floor plan was shared with the board. A collaborative committee of faculty from the music and business areas will continue to work with the design team and final designs are scheduled to be completed this summer. Construction starts in Fall 2025 and concludes in Summer 2028.

MSU leaders also discussed the future Capital Plan. The top priority projects for 2026-32 budget consideration are expected to be presented to the Board of Regents during the March board meeting.

"Morehead State is making historic investments into our campus infrastructure,” said Dr. Morgan. “These new facilities will serve as a critical asset to move MSU forward. Improving our living and learning spaces is part of our strategy as we strive to become the best public regional university in the South.”
