MSU welcomes aspiring young artists for High School Art Day

Burley-Coal Region High School students participated in High School Art Day in the Claypool-Young Art Building on Wednesday, March 12.

Morehead State University students, professors and instructors from the Department of Communication, Media, Art & Design and the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences led activities.

High school students participated in photography, printmaking, graphic design, drawing, and painting workshops. Additionally, students viewed live demonstrations of sculpture, aluminum casting, and ceramics. Students planning on studying the arts had the opportunity to participate in a portfolio review and newspaper sculpture competition.

"I think it's a really important learning opportunity for high school students to step out of their normal routine and experience these new processes of art making," said Dr. Robyn Moore, associate professor of photography and digital art. "We are offering these opportunities for self-expression and experimentation."

High school students from the Eastern Kentucky region have their work displayed in the KYAEA Burley Coal Region High School Art Exhibit. The exhibit consisted of over 300 works of high school art. Students showing artwork in the exhibition received ribbons for first, second, third and honorable mention. All first-place winners moved on to the all-state competition.

"What I enjoy the most is first seeing how great a lot of the work comes out. I'm always shocked at what these high school teachers can do," said Director of Golding-Yang Art Gallery and Sculpture Instructor Michael Bowen. "I like seeing all the students around the building talking about what's happening during the event."
