MSU Launches New Doctor of Engineering Program

MSU is launching a new Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.) in systems engineering. This applied research-focused program reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to innovation and the region’s growing need for highly trained engineers.

The new program, recently approved by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, offers two focus areas. Space systems engineering teaches students how to design and work with spacecraft and ground stations. Integrated systems engineering solves larger problems by connecting different system parts in areas like manufacturing and defense.

Dean and Professor of the College of Science & Engineering, Dr. Ahmad Zargari, says the program couldn’t come at a better time.

“MSU’s new Doctor of Engineering program in systems engineering is an applied research-focused program designed to meet the evolving needs of the aerospace, defense, and manufacturing industries,” Zargari said. “This program leverages the University's unique resources, including specialized laboratories and experienced faculty, to offer students a hands-on, applied research-focused learning experience.”

MSU is recognized for its excellence in space science and engineering, and the new doctoral program builds on that foundation. With industry demand for doctoral-level engineers at an all-time high, the program is designed to attract students from MSU’s Bachelor of Science in Space Systems Engineering and Master of Science in Space Systems Engineering programs, and professionals and graduates from other institutions looking for a distinctive, career-focused doctoral experience.

“We were excited and proud that the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education has approved our program, which represents a significant milestone for Morehead State University,” said Zargari. “We believe this program will not only enhance our academic reputation but also contribute to the region's economic development by producing highly skilled engineers.”

The curriculum is tailored to prepare students for leadership roles in research and development, systems integration, and innovation-driven projects.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for traditional students and industrial professionals who are seeking advanced education and careers in research and development,” Zargari added. “The industry is actively looking for systems engineers with terminal degrees, and this program directly addresses that need. Our graduates will be well-equipped to lead complex projects, drive innovation, and fill critical roles in these sectors.”

MSU expects substantial interest in the program, which offers a rare blend of applied research and real-world relevance.

“We anticipate a strong enrollment in this program,” said Zargari. “Our analysis revealed a significant demand for doctoral-level engineers, both regionally and nationally.”

The program will begin enrolling students in 2026. If interested, contact the College of Science & Engineering at dsci@moreheadstate.edu or by calling 606-783-2626
