MSU Nursing Program Celebrates Perfect Exam Pass Rate
For the second consecutive year, every graduate of Morehead State University’s pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has passed the NCLEX-RN exam on their first attempt—a 100% pass rate in both 2023 and 2024. This exam is required for nursing students to become licensed registered nurses.
“This outstanding accomplishment reflects the dedication and hard work of our students, faculty, and staff,” said the Chair of the Department of Nursing, Dr. Kim Clevenger (1995). “Our graduates have shown exceptional commitment to academic and clinical excellence, and this is a testament to the high-quality education and student-centered support that our program provides.”
The program includes strong support and uses tools like Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) exams to help students know what they need to study. Students make personal study plans with their teachers each semester to improve their weak spots. They also answer NCLEX-style questions in class tests and participate in activities that help them practice real-life nursing skills.
“The BSN nursing program offers a comprehensive support system designed to foster student success from day one, ensuring strong preparation for the NCLEX-RN exam and a seamless transition into professional practice,” said Clevenger. “Each semester, students collaborate with their faculty to develop personalized plans for strengthening weaker areas ... helping students apply theoretical knowledge during their clinical rotations in health care facilities.”
Students also get to practice hands-on skills early in the program. In their first semester, they work in high-tech simulation labs. They begin clinical work in hospitals and health centers by the second semester. MSU has partnerships with healthcare facilities from Lexington to Ashland, allowing students to see different healthcare settings.
“The BSN program curriculum is designed to provide extensive hands-on experience and real-life application from the very start,” said Clevenger. “These diverse clinical experiences provide students the opportunity to adapt to various situations, develop their nursing competencies, and ensure they are prepared for professional practice in any practice setting.”
Because of this intense training, MSU students often receive job offers before graduation. Since they passed the exam on their first try, they can start working as RNs immediately.
“Passing the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt allows graduates to obtain their registered nurse (RN) licenses quickly, enabling them to enter the workforce without delay,” Clevenger shared. “The majority of our graduates become licensed and ready to practice within a month of graduation.”
MSU also offers many types of financial support for nursing students. Scholarships are available through the Department of Nursing. The program recently received over $215,000 in scholarships thanks to CHI Saint Joseph Health, UK St. Claire, and a state grant program. Students can also get extra help through the CHARGE program, which gives stipends and learning support to those who need it.
“The CHARGE program specifically targets current nursing students, addressing common challenges such as access to learning resources and providing additional support to help students achieve their professional goals,” said Clevenger.
While in school, many students also work part-time as nurse externs in local hospitals. This gives them more experience and helps them feel confident before they graduate.
“I would encourage students to actively engage with faculty, mentors, and peers to build a strong professional network and sense of community,” said Clevenger. “Utilizing the full range of course resources will ensure a deeper understanding of key concepts and help develop excellent clinical reasoning skills.”
