MSU’s March to Service Impacts the Region

Morehead State University students and faculty engaged in projects across the service region during the Third Annual March to Service. These projects gave students experience using what they learned in the classroom to improve their communities.

"These service projects provide our students with hands-on opportunities to apply their learning in meaningful and impactful ways within the community," says Andrew Sexton (Class of 2020, 2022), service learning coordinator. "Our goal is for students to recognize their value as active community members now and see how they can continue making a difference in the future. Morehead State University is grateful for the dedication of our community partners and faculty who make the March to Service possible."

Highlights from the 2025 March to Service include:

  • The Department of Communications, Media, Art, & Design hosted two impactful projects led by Senior Instructor of Communication Dr. Donell Murray (Class of 2003, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2017). MSU students collaborated with local high schoolers to share insights about college life, making the path to higher education more accessible and achievable.
  • The Department of Nursing spearheaded several hands-on initiatives throughout the month, led by Associate Professor Dr. Lisa Wallace, Professor & ASN Coordinator Dr. Teresa Ellet (Class of 1991), Instructor of Nursing Maria Terrell (Class of 1995), and Professor of Nursing Dr. Nathania Bush. Nursing students provided hands-only CPR training, supported flood relief efforts in Eastern Kentucky, and presented research on prenatal and newborn care at the Community-Wide Baby Shower event.
  • The Teacher Education Program facilitated a community-focused project at the Dubois Community Center in Mount Sterling. Under the guidance of Professor Dr. Kim Sharp and Assistant Professor & Elementary Education Coordinator Dr. Gera Nelson, education students explored the legacies of African American inventors, delivering interactive presentations that highlighted their contributions. This hands-on experience allowed MSU students to sharpen essential teaching skills in collaboration, research, and public speaking while connecting with the local community.

Students participating in March to Service projects, or any other service-oriented opportunity, are encouraged to submit a reflection of their experience for consideration for the Spring 2025 Presidential Community Engaged Eagles list.
