The Morehead State University Foundation announced the creation of the Bradley Morris Rutherford Memorial Scholarship Endowment, an impactful gift that will open doors for nursing students.

This endowment was made possible through a generous lead gift from Bradley’s brother, retired Captain Bruce D. Rutherford (Class of 1971), Medical Service Corps, United States Navy, to honor Bradley’s memory and his legacy.

A native of Pineville, Bradley graduated from Bell County High School in 1963 and enrolled at Morehead State University. During the 1963-64 academic year, he completed one year of core studies that helped prepare him for nursing school. Bradley was accepted into MSU’s affiliated Nursing Program at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital (HARH). He later earned his nursing diploma and became a registered nurse.

Upon completion of the HARH Registered Nursing program, Bradley entered the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant, where he served at the 121st Evac Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, and later at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, before transitioning to civilian life. Bradley passed away in 1992 at the age of 47.

Capt. Rutherford, a long-time supporter of the MSU Foundation, has been a philanthropist for higher education. The Bradley Morris Rutherford Memorial Scholarship Endowment is the third endowment Capt. Rutherford has established at MSU.

Candidates for the Bradley Morris Rutherford Memorial Scholarship Endowment must be enrolled full-time, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and be accepted to the Pre-Licensure, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

Capt. Bruce Rutherford's legacy will continue through the scholarship endowment established in his brother Bradley's honor, forever changing the lives of future students pursuing their educational dreams.
