Morehead State instructor showcases low-budget feature filmmaking

Morehead State University will host a screening of “Oscillate Is Dead,” a feature film written and directed by lecturer & studio supervisor Matthew Kistenmacher, highlighting the creative possibilities of independent filmmaking on a minimal budget.

Years in the making, the film reflects a deeply collaborative and resourceful production process.

“This was shot over many years and with many helpers and often alone and with the generosity of a plethora of individuals who gave their time and experience with very little to offer in return except a completed film,” Kistenmacher said.

Kistenmacher said the project serves as a learning opportunity for students interested in filmmaking, particularly in understanding how to navigate creative challenges.

“Hopefully students will build upon their understanding of trying to make more from less, to consider obstacles not as roadblocks but as new pathways and to be motivated to always complete the projects that one begins,” he said. “We ultimately learn and grow by seeing everything through rather than abandoning our goals when complications arise, for in filmmaking at all levels the obstacles will always be there no matter how much experience one has.”

Created on a budget of just $600, the film emphasizes storytelling through visual composition and atmosphere rather than expensive production tools.

“Meticulous planning and a good script and a lot of moxie. Much more than what most feature films, even those referred to as low budget, would have access to,” Kistenmacher said. “The images were paramount, and the cinematography was considered the primary storytelling device. Mood and atmosphere are always available even when your other options are extremely limited.”

The screening will take place Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the ADUC Theater. The 80-minute film is free and open to the public, and a question-and-answer session with Kistenmacher will follow.
