Morehead State expands MAT Program to meet demand for teachers across Kentucky

Morehead State University is expanding its Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program to help meet the growing demand for qualified teachers across Kentucky. With new certification concentrations and a recently launched tuition model, MSU’s MAT program is now one of the most accessible and affordable pathways to teacher certification in the state.

The MAT program is designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in any field who want to transition into teaching. The program supports career-changing professionals and aspiring educators who are ready to enter the classroom and make an impact in Kentucky schools.

Delivered fully online, MSU’s MAT program offers flexibility for working adults while maintaining high-quality teacher preparation, embedded field experiences, and clear pathways to certification. The program’s new structure also reduces per-credit-hour costs, eliminates application fees, and admission testing requirements.

Beginning this fall, MSU will offer expanded MAT options, including Elementary Education and Special Education, along with additional certification areas in Middle Grades, Secondary Education, and P–12 concentrations. MSU also offers the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education MAT Program.

The expanded concentrations, paired with being the most affordable MAT program in Kentucky, position MSU’s program as an accessible and comprehensive pathway to teacher certification for aspiring and career changing educators across the state.

Middle Grades Education MAT students can choose from the following concentrations:

  • Agricultural Education
  • Business and Marketing
  • English Language Arts
  • Health
  • Mathematics
  • Music

  • Social Studies

Secondary Education MAT students can choose from the following concentrations:

  • Business and Marketing

All MAT students receive personalized advising from the program’s dedicated coordinator, who provides one-on-one support from admission through certification. This individualized guidance is another feature that sets MSU’s program apart. Students receive clear support with program admission, course sequencing, field experiences, certification steps, and career goals. Through this advising model, MSU creates a supportive and student-centered experience that helps candidates move confidently from application to classroom readiness.

"MSU's MAT is designed to provide a clear, supportive, and flexible pathway to teacher certification. Our goal is to help candidates move efficiently through a high-quality online program while receiving strong advising and personal support along the way," said Stephanie Akers (Class of 2014), MAT program coordinator.

“Although the program is fully online, students are never learning alone. They build meaningful connections with faculty, peers, and advisors while becoming part of a supportive MSU learning community.”
