Morehead State hosted 29th year of Rogers Scholars
Morehead State University welcomed talented high school students from across eastern Kentucky this summer as a host site for the Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers programs.
The programs, sponsored by the Center for Rural Development, provide leadership development and career exploration opportunities for students while introducing them to college life and potential career pathways.
MSU hosted the Rogers Scholars program this summer, which brought 50 high school juniors to campus for a week of intensive learning experiences focused on leadership, professional development and career exploration.
Rogers Scholars participated in presentations from university and community leaders, including MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan, University of Kentucky President Dr. Eli Capilouto and Morehead Mayor Laura White-Brown (Class of 2011). Students also took part in sessions focused on healthcare, space science and engineering, as well as minor sessions on agriscience and leadership development.
As part of the program's emphasis on service and community engagement, students completed volunteer work at the Derrickson Agricultural Complex.
The University also hosted Rogers Explorers this summer, welcoming 30 high school freshmen to campus for an introduction to college opportunities and career fields.
Rogers Explorers took part in sessions focused on agriscience, entrepreneurship and digital marketing. Students also learned more about academic opportunities at Morehead State through a University Spotlight presentation featuring the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science & Mathematics.
"It was exciting to have both the Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers back on campus this summer during the first two weeks of June," said Randy Manis (Class of 2006, 2008), senior instructor of communication and camp services coordinator. "As many of these students reside within our service region, it provided the institution with a wonderful opportunity to showcase our beautiful campus and several of our academic programs."
The Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers programs are designed to help students develop leadership skills, explore career interests and gain a better understanding of higher education opportunities available throughout Kentucky.
Morehead State partners with organizations across the region to provide educational experiences that encourage students to pursue academic achievement, leadership development and future career success.
