SGA President Molly Boyd wants Eagles to find their place

Molly Boyd's journey to the Student Government Association (SGA) presidency at Morehead State University is a testament to the power of finding your place, building community, and serving the campus she calls home.

Unexpected turns have defined Boyd's college journey, along with found family and a commitment to student advocacy. Now, starting her senior year, the finance major from Prestonsburg serves as the president of Morehead State University's Student Government Association.

Like many local students exploring college options, Boyd first set out to choose an option beyond her hometown's roots.

"The process was actually quite funny because in high school, I swore I would never go to MSU because that is where everyone else went," Boyd said. "Before attending MSU, I really just thought of it as a college everyone in my hometown attended after high school."

She spent her first year at Georgetown College but soon realized she needed a fresh start in the hills of Morehead. Deciding to give Morehead State a chance, Boyd transferred, a decision that quickly redefined her perspective on the University.

"After coming here, I have met so many new people and kept some old friends; this place truly feels like home to me," she said. "I would not trade my time here for anything!"

Boyd quickly adjusted to campus life. Inspired by her aunt, an MSU and Kappa Delta alum, Boyd went through Panhellenic recruitment and found a sisterhood in Delta Zeta. Outside of the classroom and student organizations, she stays busy riding horses, traveling, and spending time with her family.

It did not take long for Boyd to dive into student leadership. She joined SGA early in her MSU journey, serving as the junior representative on Congress, then as the secretary of public relations, and finally as student body president.

For Boyd, the main purpose of SGA is simple: "We are the voice for the student body," she said.

Throughout her journey, she has seen firsthand how the SGA directly shapes campus life. From discussing plans for new campus buildings to negotiating local discounts and hosting events that create a sense of belonging, SGA operates with both the administration and the student experience.

"When I decided to take on this role, it was for one reason," Boyd shared. "MSU has given me so much. I wanted to give back to the University."

As president, Boyd holds various responsibilities. She leads the executive branch, oversees the executive board, manages appointments, and acts as the link between students and University leadership.

For the upcoming academic year, Boyd and her executive team have set goals to expand representation and break down barriers between students and their government. Key initiatives include adding a new representative position to the SGA Congress and creating outreach events to make campus resources and the SGA itself more accessible to every student.

Boyd emphasizes that getting involved is easy. Congressional elections take place every fall, with sign-up forms sent directly to students' email addresses during the first week of classes.

"Getting involved in SGA has been such a crucial part of my time here at MSU," Boyd said. "Not only have I gotten to be a voice for my peers, but I have made some of my best friends through SGA."

Some of her favorite college memories come from SGA-sponsored gatherings, particularly Eagle Fest, an annual event she loves for bringing campus back together after summer break.

Boyd said her experience in SGA has directly impacted her chosen career path beyond graduation. Working alongside University administrators has inspired her to pursue a long-term career in higher education.

"SGA has opened so many doors for me in my field. It has shown me a lot of ups and downs in higher education and how universities operate," Boyd said. "One of the main things SGA has shown me is that there is no university without the students. And for someone who wants to work in higher education, getting to be a voice for all students has been a blessing."
