Morehead State University's Master of Arts in Teaching Program Experiences Record Growth

Morehead State University's redesigned and expanded Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is experiencing unprecedented growth as the University continues to address Kentucky's critical teacher workforce needs.

Following the launch of new MAT concentrations and the University's commitment to affordability, enrollment in the program has increased by more than 245% compared to recent years, far surpassing initial projections. The dramatic growth comes after Morehead State's MAT program was recognized as Kentucky's most affordable pathway to teacher certification and advancement.

"The response to our expanded MAT program has been extraordinary," said Dr. Nicola Mason (Class of 2007), dean of the Volgenau College of Education. "This growth reflects both the demand for flexible, high-quality teacher preparation programs and Morehead State's commitment to making graduate education accessible for aspiring and current educators across the Commonwealth."

The strong enrollment in Elementary Education and Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) concentrations underscores the continued need for qualified educators in foundational learning environments.

A significant portion of MAT candidates are currently employed as full-time teachers through Kentucky's Option 6 pathway, allowing participants to earn their teaching certification while serving in classrooms and addressing educator shortages in their local school districts.

The program's enrollment growth follows a comprehensive redesign that expanded concentration offerings, increased accessibility for working professionals and provided one of the most affordable graduate teacher preparation options in Kentucky.

"Our students are making an immediate impact in schools throughout Kentucky," Mason said. "By preparing educators where they are needed most and providing an affordable pathway to certification, we are helping strengthen the future of education across the region."

The MAT program's growth aligns with Morehead State's longstanding mission of serving the Commonwealth through workforce development and educational excellence. University leaders anticipate continued momentum as awareness of the expanded program grows among prospective educators and school districts.
