Vascular Sonography Concentration: Coming Fall 2024

DMS students who choose the concentration will learn how to perform vascular sonographic examination and will be able to sit for the vascular sonography board examination.

What You’ll Learn in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program

Learn by doing, both in our state-of-the-art facilities and in clinical placement settings throughout the region. Acquire skills and knowledge that will qualify you to pass American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography certification exams. 

What You Can Do with a DMS Degree

Graduates of the DMS program will have the skills to work in hospitals, doctor's offices, medical imaging clinics education, research, sales, and applications. You can choose a vascular sonography concentration to specialize your skills. 

What Makes Morehead State’s Program Different

The DMS program at Morehead State boasts high job placement rates, and our students pass national credentialing exams at rates well above state and national averages. Students will be placed into either the Abdomen/Vascular concentration or the Abdomen/OBGYN concentration. 

Admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program

The DMS Program at Morehead State has a selective admission process. Admission to Morehead State does not guarantee admission to the DMS program. The qualified applicant must be a radiographer who is registry-eligible or registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and must have completed all prerequisites before entry.  

Unconditional acceptance to Morehead State University through the Office of Admissions.

Completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of "C" (Some courses can be transferred from other institutions):

  • FYS 101 – First Year Seminar 3 hours
  • COMS 108 - Fundamentals of Speech Communication, 3 hours.
  • ENG 100 - Writing I, 3 hours.
  • ENG 200 - Writing II, 3 hours.
  • MATH 152 - College Algebra (minimum), 3 hours.
  • IMS/NURS 202 - Medical Terminology, 2 hours.
  • Natural Sciences General Education Requirement, 6 hours.
  • BIOL 234 - Principles of Human Anatomy and Physiology I (NSC 1 counts as Natural Science General Education Requirement), 3 hours.
  • BIOL 235 - Principles of Human Anatomy and Physiology II, 3 hours.
  • Social and Behavior Science General Education, 3 hours.
  • Arts and Humanities – 3 hours
  • Global Cultures Arts and Humanities – 3 hours
  • Ethics and Civic Engagement SBS – 3 hours

Note: If you did not take a FYS 101 course you must take an additional three hours in SBS.

More than two failures of pre-radiologic science courses within two complete academic years will result in ineligibility for admission. This includes failure of more than two courses or failures of the same course more than twice. Students with course failure(s) prior to two complete academic years will be considered for admission if the student has demonstrated satisfactory academic progress ("C" or above in required courses) since the course failure(s).

A grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher for all required college work.

Graduates of the Associate Degree Radiologic Science program at MSU or other radiography program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Considerations for non-JRCERT program graduates will be evaluated on an individual or program basis. Graduates of an approved program may receive an equivalent block credit to satisfy the radiography component.

Registered and in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiography. Applicants who are not registered must obtain certification prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

Meet health and physical capability requirements established by the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Imaging Sciences.

Possess current certification in basic life support for health care providers (CPR) by the American Heart Association.

MISSION

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, in conjunction with the department and University's mission, is committed to preparing graduates to function as competent entry-level sonographers and to provide a foundation for continued lifetime learning designated in diagnostic medical sonography.

GOALS

The student will:   

Be prepared to practice as competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the Abdominal Sonography-Extended and Obstetrics and Gynecology Sonography Concentrations.

  1. Students manipulate equipment controls to provide optimum image quality.
  2. Students recognize and differentiate various pathologies.
  3. Students exhibit professional and ethical behavior during sonographic procedures.
  4. Students complete the diagnostic medical sonography program and gain employment.
  5. Graduates pass the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers credentialing examinations.
  6. Integrate scientific knowledge and technical skills with effective communication methods to provide quality care and useful diagnostic information.
  7. Students practice effective oral communication skills.
  8. Students practice effective written communication skills.

Employ critical thinking.

  1. Students analyze sonographic principles and apply the information.
  2. Students demonstrate competence in the performance of diagnostic medical sonography procedures.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS).

Applications will be accepted beginning in January and must be received by the first Monday in April.

Submit a complete application packet with the following required materials:

  1. DMS Application
  2. Official transcripts documenting all courses required for admission. Students currently enrolled are required to submit spring mid-term grades for consideration. Students attending institutions that do not provide mid-term grades must submit a letter from the radiography program coordinator or individual faculty in general education courses stating the student's letter grade at the current time for each course. All letters must be submitted on official institutional letterhead. Students must complete required courses with a "C" or better and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  3. Copy of course description(s) if course equivalencies are not listed on the transfer credit webpage.
  4. Copy of the current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists registration card for radiography. Applicants who are not registered must obtain certification prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
  5. Copy of the current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registration card (if applicable).

Fees and expenses specific to the program are in addition to those required by MSU. These are subject to change without notification. The students are responsible for the purchase of:

  • Dark gray uniforms
  • White hosiery or tights (if applicable)
  • White or black clinical shoes
  • Dark gray lab coat
  • Malpractice insurance
  • Laboratory fees
  • Trajecsys Report System
  • All housing and transportation expenses incurred during clinical internship assignments.

As required, students are also responsible for all fees for:

  • Criminal background checks
  • Drug testing
  • Certification examinations
  • All applicable course fees
