Admission to the AASN program

The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing has a selective admissions process separate from and in addition to admission to MSU. Admission to MSU does not guarantee admission into nursing programs.

The first step is admission to Morehead State University, see admission requirements

The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Program (AASN) has limited enrollment on the Morehead and Mt. Sterling campuses. The following criteria are used to determine conditional acceptance to the AASN Program

1. American College Test (Enhanced ACT) Score with a mandatory minimum composite score of 20 or higher. Or, ATI Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Examination with a mandatory minimum total score of 80% or higher. Tests are to be proctored and taken at an institutional testing center. Morehead State University Testing Center offers both tests.

2. Applicants must meet the following:

A. A GPA of 3.0 or higher on a scale of 4.0 with a minimum grade of "C" in prerequisite courses required for the AASN Program
  • BIOL 234 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
  • ENG 100 Core Writing I
  •  Math Core - MATH 135 recommended (or MATH 131, MATH 152, MATH 174, Math 175,
  • or equivalent).

B. Applicants with a grade less than “C” on two courses required for the AASN within the last two years from the term of application due date (last Friday in March, last Friday in October) are not eligible for admission.
C. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all work at Morehead State University.
D. Applicants may be conditionally admitted to the program pending successful completion of prerequisite courses required for admission to the program.

3. Final acceptance will be dependent on maintaining course grades and grade point average as well as meeting CPR and Health requirements by established dates. Compliance with the Technical Performance Standards is also required.

4. Clinical education is a mandatory component of the AASN Program. Due to accreditation requirements of the clinical education centers, students will be required to obtain a criminal background check and undergo drug testing prior to acceptance to the clinical assignment. The student is responsible for any incurred cost. Any student who fails acceptance to the clinical assignment will be unable to complete the program.

5. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) K-Credit: LPNs who achieve a minimum score of 900 on the HESI Nursing Fundamentals exam can obtain K-Credit for NURA 114 and enter the program in the 2nd semester provided they meet all other admission criteria. For review and exam preparation, LPNs may use the latest edition of the Nugent, P., Vitale, B. Fundamentals Success: NCLEX-Style Q&A review. It may be available at the Camden-Carroll Library on the Morehead campus as well as for purchase at the MSU bookstore.

Conditions for Enrollment

1. Students may be assigned to clinical practice areas other than those in the immediate area, requiring traveling up to 1.5 hours from the assigned campus. Transportation to and from these settings is the responsibility of the student.

2. Clinical experiences and formal lectures may be required during various hours of the day, evening, and night.

3. Students have the responsibility for the cost incurred by enrollment in the nursing program. This cost includes CPR, immunizations, professional malpractice insurance, personal health insurance, criminal background check, academic materials, testing fees, clothing, and equipment.
