Nursing, Post-Licensure, B.S.N.

• Be unconditionally admitted to MSU.
• Declare nursing as the area and meet with assigned nursing faculty advisor.
• Submit required materials listed below to the Baccalaureate Nursing Program by the last Friday in March for admission into the fall semester or the last Friday in October for admission into the spring semester:
• Completed Department of Nursing application.
• Transcripts from MSU and all universities/colleges attended if courses not listed on MSU transcript.
• Nursing transfer student: in addition to the above materials must submit:
• University undergraduate catalog(s) if transfer credit is sought;
• Syllabi for nursing course(s) to be evaluated for transfer credit; and
• Letter of recommendation from the director/coordinator of the nursing program from which the student is transferring.
• Validation of current Kentucky registered nursing licensure.
• Validation of current American Heart Association certification in Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (CPR).
• Verification of professional malpractice insurance.

• Students have the responsibility for the costs incurred by enrollment in the nursing program. These costs include CPR certification, immunizations, health insurance, professional malpractice insurance, criminal background check(s), drug testing, academic materials, testing fees, clothing and equipment.
• Clinical education is a mandatory component of the BSN. Due to accreditation requirements of the clinical education centers, students will be required to obtain a criminal background check and/or undergo drug testing prior to acceptance of clinical assignment. The student is responsible for any incurred cost. Any student who fails acceptance to the clinical assignment will be unable to complete the program.

MISSION

The mission of the Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Post-licensure Program is to expand the nursing workforce to promote health and well-being of the populace at the local and global level. Graduates of the RN-Bachelors of Science in Nursing are prepared to function as leaders to provide high quality, safe, effective and equitable patient-centered care. Graduates will have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to promote better health outcomes by coordinating care of patients in states of health as well as complex illness.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES

To improve the quality of the baccalaureate-prepared nursing workforce to:

• Provide leadership to promote better health outcomes at the local and global level.
• Collaborate and coordinate with the interprofessional team to promote safe, high-quality care for patients with complex illnesses in a complex and ever-changing health care environment.
• Promote health, wellness and disease prevention.
• Possess knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to provide evidence-based care and maintain currency through lifelong learning.
• Demonstrate accountable professional behaviors that are ethical, legal and moral.

EXPECTED PROGRAM OUTCOMES

The graduate of the program will be able to:

• Assume a leadership role in promoting quality and compliance regarding safety and health in a complex health care environment.
• Develop effective clinical reasoning skills utilizing evidence based guidelines.
• Use informatics to support safe and effective patient care environments and to assist in patient and interprofessional communication.
• Evaluate health care policy, financial and regulatory environments that impact delivery of health care services.
• Develop effective interprofessional communication and collaboration and function effectively in interprofessional teams.
• Promote individual and population health through health promotion and mitigation of acute and chronic illness.
• Exhibit professional behaviors that are accountable, ethical, legal and moral.
• Integrate knowledge and methods from a variety of disciplines, human growth and development, pathophysiology and pharmacology to promote effective clinical reasoning in the provision of client-centered care.

A RN-MSN Track exists at the undergraduate level for those students wishing to progress through the post-licensure BSN and MSN programs seamlessly. If admitted to the RN-MSN Track, a student would apply to and be conditionally admitted to the MSN Program under the RN-MSN Pathway (with the current admission criteria standing) and will be permitted to take nine (9) hours of graduate MSN coursework that will be counted as credit for both the post-licensure BSN degree and the MSN degree.

The nine hours of coursework will be specifically as follows:

• NURG 610: Health Assessment for Advanced Practice (3 credit hours)
• NURG 613: Pathophysiology for Advanced Practice (3 credit hours)
• NURG 630: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (3 credit hours)

Upon completion of these nine hours, with a "B" or higher in each course and completion of the BSN degree, the student be then unconditionally admitted to the MSN program to complete the remainder of the program requirements.
