What You'll Learn in the pre-licensure nursing program

The BSN Pre-licensure program is designed for entering college students that are not licensed nurses. Learn the skills and gain the knowledge you need to enter a rewarding healthcare career by studying in our state-of-the-art facilities and clinical placement in various healthcare facilities throughout the region.  

What You Can Do with a nursing Degree

A nursing degree from MSU prepares you to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. As a registered nurse, you can work in various environments, including hospitals, surgical suites, doctor's offices and other health care providers. Our nursing programs have consistently had 100% job placement rates for the past decade.

What Makes Morehead State’s Program different

Our nursing program offers hands-on training in our state-of-the-art simulation labs. You’ll learn by working with interactive mannequins that simulate different conditions and symptoms. 

Admission to the Nursing pre-licensure program

The BSN Pre-Licensure program has a selective admissions process, and a limited number of students are accepted each year. Admission to Morehead State University does not guarantee admission to nursing programs. If there are more qualified applicants than available positions, students with the highest GPA will be accepted.

Requirements

  • Completion of the 31 credit hours of the required pre-nursing courses listed in the curriculum sequence for the first year of the  
program. 
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0 or above (with no rounding) based on the required 31 credits with no grade being less than a  
"C." 
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 or above for BIOL 234: Human Anatomy and Physiology I, BIOL 235: Human Anatomy  
and Physiology II and MATH 135: Math for Technical Students (or the equivalent). 
  • Submission of ACT composite score. A minimum ACT composite score of 20 is required for admission eligibility. 
  • More than two failures of any two required courses within three (3) years of application to the program will result in ineligibility  
for admission. Students with course failures prior to the 3-year period will be considered for admission if the student has  
demonstrated satisfactory academic progress (C or above in required courses) since the course failures. Full-time study for two  
consecutive semesters will be required in order to evaluate academic status. At least two-thirds (2/3) of these credits must be in  
program-required general education or support courses. This policy also applies to transfer students. 
  • Applicants who are currently enrolled but have not yet completed the required 16 semester hours of the second semester at the  
time of application are eligible for conditional acceptance based on mid-term grades. Final acceptance will be dependent on  
maintaining course grades and grade point averages as outlined in the above criteria. 
  • Possess current certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (CPR). 
  • Documentation of compliance with all health requirements. 
  • Compliance with the Technical Performance Standards. 

Note: Admission criteria and procedures are reviewed on an annual basis. It is the applicant's responsibility to verify prior to the 
application deadline that the criteria and procedures have not been revised.

  • Students may be assigned to a clinical practicum area other than those in the immediate vicinity requiring traveling some distance. Transportation to and from these settings is the responsibility of the student.
  • Clinical experiences and formal lectures may be required during various hours of the day, evening and night.
  • Students have the responsibility for the cost incurred by enrollment in the nursing program. This cost includes clothing, equipment, malpractice insurance and academic materials.
  • Students will be required to adhere to all policies of the health care agency to which they are assigned for clinical experiences.

Mission

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program is to provide excellence in baccalaureate nursing education which prepares graduates to promote health and well-being among the people of eastern Kentucky, the greater Commonwealth, and those whom our graduates serve in the global community.

Expected Program Outcomes

  • Graduates of the BSN Program will be able to demonstrate the role of the professional nurse by:
  • Demonstrating the application of critical thinking skills through the nursing process in the planning and provision of nursing care.
  • Communicating effectively in a variety of spoken, written, and technological formats.
  • Demonstrating competence, initiative, and commitment to the nursing profession.
  • Integrating current scientific knowledge, nursing theory and nursing research to deliver quality health care in accordance with the ANA Standards of Care and Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Assuming leadership roles within interdisciplinary health care teams and the profession of nursing.
  • Providing compassionate, sensitive, spiritual and culturally appropriate nursing care for patients at any stage of the life span.
  • Analyzing global issues in the context of cultural diversity.
  • Creating a health care environment that is conducive to wellness and health promotion.
