Service Animals
According to the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADA), a service animal is "...a dog that has been individually trained to perform a specific, essential task to offset a functional limitation of a person with a disability." Disability categories include physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual and other mental impairments.
What is the difference between a service animal and an emotional support animal?
Other species of animals, whether trained or untrained, are not considered service animals, with the singular exception of trained miniature horses in certain situations. A dog that provides emotional comfort, crime prevention, or companionship is not considered a service animal. Review MSU's policies regarding emotional support animals here.
This University Administrative Regulation (UAR) sets forth the rules and regulations regarding the presence of animals on University property. The purpose of this UAR is to foster a healthy, safe, and supportive environment that respects the rights of all individuals while protecting the educational mission of the University, nature of the campus environment, and ensuring safety and preserving the integrity of its buildings and property.
