Returning Student Move-in Information

Returning students and transfer students living in an upperclass residence hall are able to return to campus and move into their new home on Saturday, Aug. 12 and Sunday, Aug. 13, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Though the move-in experience on Returning Student Weekend is a little different than your First Year Student experience, there are still steps to take to ensure your move-in process goes as smoothly and easily as possible

Prior to Your Arrival

Prior to arrival, students will want to do several things in advance to help their move-in experience go smoothly. Specifically:

  • Confirm housing assignment via the housing self-service portal.
  • Discuss with roommates who is bringing large items to share.
  • Frequently check your MSU email for housing or move-in updates or information that you will need to know.

On Move-In Day

Unlike move-in day for first-year students with road closures, a central starting point, and a very prescriptive process, returning student weekend is a bit different. In order to make the transition to your new home seamless as well as fellow students' processes easy, we ask the following:

  • Please pay special attention to your email in advance of your arrival day in order to be aware of any changes to the process, your assignment, or your move-in expectations.
  • Once you arrive, proceed directly to your residence hall.
  • Follow instructions of police staff or move-in signage.
  • Once you have unloaded your vehicle and BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO SET UP YOUR NEW SPACE, please move your vehicle to satellite parking. Failure to do so will result in your vehicle being ticketed and towed.
  • During the move-in processes, traffic will be very heavy, and pedestrians will be plentiful. Please be patient with our process and our people.

Restricted parking & Traffic flow information:

After unloading, move your vehicle(s) to a legal parking zone away from the residence halls to satellite parking to make space available for other students. If your vehicle is staying overnight on Thursday, you must move your vehicle to designated overnight parking. Restricted Parking Information coming soon.

FAQ

Unlike first-year student moving in, returning students or transfer students arriving over the weekend will need to proceed directly to their residence hall. There is no organized line-up process like new students undertake.

There are no individual times for arrivals for returning/transfer students. The campus is asking move-ins to begin no earlier than 9 a.m. and complete no later than 7 p.m.

There will not be volunteers to assist with your move in over the weekend, so if you have access to a handcart or dolly that will make your experience even smoother.

We would ask students to limit the number of vehicles or people assisting to maximize space, traffic, and parking on move-in days.

There is no set time limit for check-in, we would simply ask students to be mindful of others as they are unloading. Please unload and move your vehicle before beginning to unpack and set your space up.

Once all items are removed from the vehicle and the student is checking in, the vehicle needs to be moved. We ask students arriving over the weekend to move their vehicle once unloaded to a spot in a satellite lot or overflow parking. Parking around the halls and S lots return to normal enforcement on Sunday evening.
