PURPOSE:

To provide a new staff member with information about the University, his/her position and department and enable the individual to become adjusted to the new assignment and become an important and vital part of the University community.

THE OFFICE OF HUMAN RESOURCES ROLE:

It is the responsibility of the Office of Human Resources to present information and obtain the necessary signatures for forms relating to taxes, social security, retirement, insurances, and salary or wages. The office also will provide a general organizational overview of the employing department as it relates to the University and when, where, and to whom the staff member will report.

THE EMPLOYING DEPARTMENT:

It is the responsibility of the staff member's supervisor to see that the overall orientation above is supplemented on a day-to-day basis with specific training for proper procedures in the new assignment and to cover or coordinate information in the following areas:

  1. Tour of department/office--introductions
    1. Introduction to fellow workers.
    2. Explain activities and operations including a tour of the building or plant and a description of the organization.
    3. Location of wash room, cafeterias, bulletin boards, etc.
  2. General information
    1. Good student contact principles.
    2. Parking.
    3. Transportation.
    4. Where and how to enter the premise.
    5. Starting and quitting times, lunch periods, shifts, etc.
    6. Rate of pay, increases, including when, where, and how paid.
    7. Overtime--probability, methods, rates, etc.
    8. Safety policy--reporting and avoiding accidents and where to obtain medical attention.
    9. Local rules--smoking, breaks, use of the telephone, etc.
    10. When and whom to call in case of sickness or absence.
  3. Work assignment
    1. Arrange for first work assignment.
    2. Provide the necessary training to do the job.
    3. Designate person to whom to go for help.
    4. Explain how to obtain the necessary tools and supplies.
    5. Check on work performance.
  4. Counseling
    1. Counsel the employee concerning how he/she is doing.
    2. Discuss the employee's adjustment regarding work and/or work group.
