Sound of Science

An entrepreneurial maker program for STEM+X enthusiasts

soundofscience-950x615-copy.webpThe Sound of Science STEM+X summer program brings together the creative worlds of science, music, engineering, mathematics and entrepreneurship. This hands-on program experience is for rising 8th, 9th and 10th-grade students and culminates with students designing, constructing, and selling custom-tuned handmade wind chimes. Topics will include the properties of waves, measurement techniques, application of algebraic and geometric concepts, basic music theory, cost analysis, and basic woodworking. The wind chimes made throughout the program will be displayed and sold during the St. Claire Freedom Fest in downtown Morehead on Saturday, July 1.

Participants will:

  • Use science and mathematics to design and build custom handcrafted tuned windchimes.
  • Build a windchime that they take home and a second windchime to sell.
  • Learn about entrepreneurship as they create a simulated small business and serve as a vendor at the St. Claire Freedom Fest in downtown Morehead.
  • Present their individual technical design for their windchime and their group business plan with results.
