Hydrogen Maser

One of the most vital pieces of equipment housed at the Space Science Center is the University's hydrogen maser.

Given to the center in 2016 by MIT, the device uses hydrogen gas to determine an atomic frequency standard that allows for precision timekeeping. Masers are components of atomic clocks, which set an international time standard and are used in spacecraft tracking and ranging. In addition, masers can be used as low-noise amplifiers in radio telescopes and deep space spacecraft communication ground stations.
