Financial Aid Verification

Every year the U.S. Department of Education selects a percentage of financial aid applicants for a review of their financial aid information. This process of review is known as verification. MSU partners with KHEAA (Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority) to complete all verification services on behalf of MSU.

Process

If the student's application is selected for review, they may be requested to submit certain information regarding:

  • Adjusted Gross Income
  • Federal Income Tax Paid
  • Household Size
  • Number in College
  • Sources and Amounts of Untaxed Income
  • Receipt of Federal Need-Based Benefits
  • High School Completion
  • Identity
  • Other information as determined by federal regulations

The student will be contacted by KHEAA Verify requesting the necessary documents. This information is compared to the information submitted on the student's FAFSA. If there is a discrepancy, corrections will be made and submitted to the Department of Education. KHEAA Verify will contact students selected for verification and provide instructions on completing the verification process.

Note: Students will not be able to access their KHEAA Verify account online until MSU notifies KHEAA that the student was selected.

If students have questions regarding their verification, they should contact KHEAA Verify at:

The student cannot receive any federal financial aid funds until the verification process has been completed.

VERIFICATION POLICY AND PROCEDURES

All applicants selected for verification through the computer edits used by the U.S. Department of Education's central processor are verified by MSU and/or KHEAA Verify regardless of any limit reached. In addition to applicants selected by the system, MSU and/or KHEAA Verify will verify any non-selected applicant when MSU and/or KHEAA Verify becomes aware of conflicting information.

MSU and/or KHEAA Verify applies all permissible exclusions when appropriate.

No exclusion will be applied (unless an applicant dies during the award year), when MSU and/or KHEAA Verify has conflicting data or has reason to believe that the information is incorrect.

This institution does not utilize the option for interim disbursements of Federal Pell Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, CAP Grant, Federal SEOG, or Federal Direct Loan. Verification is considered complete when the applicant has submitted all requested documents and the accuracy of the information has been established. If necessary, a new EFC will be calculated, and when appropriate, the award will be adjusted.

This institution will allow a selected applicant to work on a Federal Student Employment job for up to sixty (60) days after enrollment before verification completion unless this institution has conflicting documentation. At this time, FSE students who have not completed verification will have their employment terminated. Reinstatement of FSE may be allowed if the applicant subsequently completes verification in a timely fashion and before the final deadline.

The final deadline for completion of verification is 115 days after the last date of attendance to allow for disbursement within the 120-day deadline published in the Federal Register. If the applicant has not submitted complete documentation, the verification will be terminated, and any pending financial aid awards will be canceled. The student will be notified of this deadline.

Upon verification completion, KHEAA Verify will notify MSU, who will notify the selected applicant of any award changes through (1) an amended award notification and (2) a corrected Student Aid Report Acknowledgement reprocessed through the Department of Education's Central Processor. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid for an explanation of corrections and amended awards.

MSU and/or KHEAA Verify will correct inaccurate data and calculate a new expected Family Contribution (EFC) through the Federal Methodology formula. If corrections are necessary, they will be made electronically through Morehead State University's Office of Financial Aid and the Department of Education's Central Processor. The corrected Student Aid Acknowledgement will then be sent to the student by the central processor to notify them of any change.

When MSU and/or KHEAA Verify becomes aware that an applicant has been selected for verification, requests for documents are made. Follow-up requests will be made throughout the process until the verification process is complete. Requests for information will contain a clear explanation of the documents needed to satisfy the verification requirements. The applicant is responsible for checking their MSU email account and KHEAA Verify account regarding the verification status.

Requests for information will contain a clear explanation of the documents needed to satisfy the verification requirements. The applicant's responsibilities regarding verification completion will be clearly stated in the request.

Verification is the federal government's way of making sure students are correctly reporting their information on the FAFSA.

MSU has a partnership with KHEAA (Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority) to complete all verification services on behalf of MSU.

KHEAA Verify will contact all students who are selected for Verification with instructions on how to complete the process. All verification documents should be completed and submitted to KHEAA, not MSU. Please monitor your MSU email for further instructions from KHEAA Verify.
