Curricular Practical Training

 

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) includes internships and other practical experiences for international students.

Please visit International Student Services to obtain a CPT packet.

If you are interested in engaging in an internship program with off-campus employment benefits please contact the ISS office. Please do not engage in off-campus employment during the summer or anytime while you are a student at MSU.

PRECONDITIONS

The student must have been enrolled for one full academic year. An exception can be made for graduate students whose curriculum requires immediate Curricular Practical Training.

LOCATION

Students may engage in CPT only for the specific employer, location and period approved and recorded by the DSO, in SEVIS.

HOURS PER WEEK

Students can be approved for part-time or full-time work.

FIELD/LEVEL OF WORK

The field/level of work must be an integral part of an established curriculum in the student's course of study.

OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT

The student must have an offer of employment from an employer offering work that qualifies as CPT.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Bring the following documents to the Office of International Education

  • Unofficial copy of Transcript
  • Letter of recommendation for CPT from your advisor
  • Letter of job offer with name and address of employer, job title, beginning and ending date of employment
  • All immigration papers

Requirements

  • The student must maintain a full course of study in F-1 status during employment.
  • The student must be in valid F-1 status.
