The following suggestions for piano-scholarship-auditions are applicable for all of the various piano degrees that we offer at Morehead State University including The Bachelor of Music degree in Applied Piano and Collaborative Piano, The Bachelor of Arts degree, and the Bachelor of Music Education program with keyboard emphasis:

  • Major Scales in all 12 keys, two or four octaves, hands together. Eighth notes, quarter = 100+
  • Two or more solo works originally written for the piano totaling at least ten minutes of music. The pieces should represent at least two different composers of different stylistic periods (i.e., Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic or Modern), and demonstrate a range of styles and abilities. A movement or individual piece from a larger work may be considered as one piece. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, so memorization is highly recommended, though not required.
  • Sight Reading- Sight reading samples will be at the early intermediate level. Easier accompaniments from the vocal or instrumental literature as well as church hymns, and late elementary repertoire may be used by the scholarship candidate to prepare for this portion of the audition. It would also be helpful for the candidate to have some accompanying experience, as this is an excellent way to become a successful sight reader.
