Writing Cover Letters

Cover letters are a great way to make yourself stand out as an applicant. A well-written cover letter can really boost your application, but a poorly written one might hurt it. Since there’s no single way to write a perfect cover letter, you should spend as much time on it as you do on other parts of your job search.

Tips for Writing a Cover Letter

  • Avoid Generic Letters: Don’t use a standard template. Make your letter unique to you.
  • Use Business Format: Follow the standard business letter format.
  • Keep It Short: Limit your cover letter to one page.
  • Choose Clear Fonts: Use standard fonts in sizes 10.5 to 12.
  • Customize Your Letter: Tailor your letter to the company and the job you’re applying for. Show that you’re informed, motivated, and a good fit.
  • Match Your Background to the Job: Read the job description carefully. List the skills and qualities they seek and match them with your qualifications.
  • Focus on What You Can Offer: Write your letter from the employer’s perspective. Show how you can add value and make them want to learn more about you.
  • Give Specific Examples: Instead of just saying you know how to use Microsoft Excel, describe a specific time you used it effectively using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
    • Situation: Describe the context (who, what, where, when). Mention the project, your role, and others involved.
    • Task: Explain what needed to be done and why.
    • Action: Detail what you did and how you did it.
    • Result: Share the outcome of your actions. Include any numbers that show your achievements.
  • Use Examples from Various Activities: Draw from class projects, volunteer work, internships, sports, or student organizations to show your experience and skills.
  • Customize for Each Job: If you’re applying to similar positions, update your cover letter for each one. Make sure to change the company name, job title, and contact person.
  • Proofread Carefully: Avoid typos and mistakes, which can leave a wrong impression. Have someone knowledgeable, like CCDEE, check your letter for errors.

A strong cover letter should go beyond your resume and help you stand out!
