Grounds
MSU's grounds management practices keep sustainability and conservation in mind.
Tree Campus USA
MSU has been recognized as a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for sustainable urban forest management and environmental stewardship annually since 2014. MSU utilizes best management practices in our tree care plan and organizes annual events, clinics and workshops regarding tree biology and benefits on campus and in the Morehead community.
Bee Campus USA
MSU has been recognized as a Bee Campus USA since 2016 by Bee City USA for utilizing a pollinator protection plan and holding annual events, clinics and workshops about the importance of pollinators on campus and in the community MSU farm has several beehives and educates students about the importance of protecting pollinators.
Eagle Lake
MSU's Eagle Lake is surrounded by 645 acres of forested land. The area provides students with outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking trails, student camping areas, mountain bike trails, canoeing and kayaking.
Outdoor Adventures
MSU Outdoor Adventures coordinates many hiking, climbing, paddling and camping trips for students and rents outdoor equipment to students. It also has an outdoor challenge course.
Outdoor Classrooms
MSU has two outdoor classrooms. The Carbon Pocket Park features a stormwater basin to help slow runoff, contains pollinator-friendly native plantings, and has several environmental activity stations that demonstrate environmentally friendly concepts and best practices. The classroom behind Lappin Hall features native plant composting and stormwater collection rain barrels. Both areas have certified monarch way stations.
MSU Farm
MSU Farm produces flowers and plants for campus landscaping and holds a weekly campus farmers market with MSU Farm produce and local farm produce. The farm composts all its organic matter and utilizes the compost to fertilize and improve the soil for crops and campus grounds.
Pest Management
Integrate pest management is practiced throughout campus. Natural pest prevention strategies are prioritized and chemical pesticides are used only as a last resort after other options have been exhausted.
Sonny Allen Baseball Field
The baseball field incorporated 1600 pounds of biochar in 2015 which helps offset our carbon footprint.
Eagle Trace Golf Course
The golf course has replaced all turf with environmentally friendly Zoysia grass, helping reduce water consumption and chemical usage that is normally required to maintain golf greens.
