Tech REquirements for blackboard

To ensure optimal performance and access to all Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) features at Morehead State University, students and faculty are advised to meet the following minimum technology requirements.

  • Windows: Windows 10 or later

  • Mac: macOS 10.13 or later

  • Linux: Ubuntu 18.04 or later

  • Mobile Devices:

    - iOS 13 or later

    - Android 9.0 (Pie) or later

  • Google Chrome (latest stable version)
  • Mozilla Firefox (latest stable version)
  • Microsoft Edge (latest stable version)
  • Apple Safari (latest stable version)

Note: Blackboard may not function properly on outdated or unsupported browsers, including Internet Explorer. Users should regularly update their browsers to the latest version for enhanced security and performance.

For a smooth user experience, a stable broadband internet connection with a speed of at least 1 Mbps is recommended. Wireless connections are acceptable, but a wired connection is preferred for tasks involving large file uploads, streaming, or other bandwidth-intensive activities.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: This is for viewing and downloading PDF files. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Microsoft Office: For creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. All current students and employees are licensed to use Microsoft Office 365 at no additional cost.
  • Java: Some interactive content may require Java, so it is recommended that you install and update it on your system.
  • JavaScript and Cookies: For Blackboard features to function properly, ensure that both JavaScript and cookies are enabled in your web browser.

For courses utilizing video or audio components:

  • Webcam: Built-in or external webcam for video-based activities, such as live sessions or recordings.
  • Microphone: Built-in or external microphone for audio-based participation.
  • Headphones/Headset: Recommended to improve sound quality and avoid audio feedback during virtual sessions.
  • Speakers: External or built-in speakers for listening to course materials or videos.

  • Blackboard Instructor App: For faculty to manage courses, post grades, and engage with students on mobile devices. Available on iOS and Android.
  • Blackboard Student App: This app is available on iOS and Android and allows students to access grades, course content, assignments, and announcements.

Note: While the Blackboard mobile app provides many features, full functionality is best achieved through a web browser on a desktop or laptop computer.

  • Pop-up Blockers: Ensure that any pop-up blockers in your web browser are disabled, as some Blackboard tools require pop-ups to function.
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN): If accessing Blackboard from an off-campus location, use the MSU VPN for a secure connection to university resources.
  • Technical Support: For troubleshooting issues, contact the Morehead State University Help Desk at 606-783-HELP (4357) or visit Technology at MSU.

Disclaimer: Blackboard’s features and functionality may evolve over time.
