A Design Maker Program for Engineering Enthusiasts
Build Strong is for students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In this 6-day STEM-based program hosted by the Center for STEM+eXcellence, students will learn science, mathematics, and engineering as well as the conduct, ethics, and professionalism required for success in these fields.
Build Strong 8th, 9th, and 10th-grade students in Kentucky. The program culminates with students engineering, constructing, and testing one of three basic bridge types. Topics include scientific measurement and error, linear motion, forces, gravity, free-body diagram analysis, vectors, algebra, trigonometry, and engineering concepts. Participants will apply science and engineering ideas to design, evaluate and support solutions to real-world problems while they meet and work with like-minded peers.

STEM Program Educator: Mr. Gary Coffman
Gary Coffman is the program educator for the Build Strong STEM summer program. He is a 9-12th grade science teacher at West Carter High School. Coffman earned his B.S. in physics and his Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Marshall University. He is currently pursuing his education specialist degree at Asbury University. He has taught in Kentucky since 2002 and his methods have led to increased student achievement and measurable increases in ACT and state test scores. Coffman specializes in providing inquiry-based laboratory experiences and using technology to promote student engagement, learning, and inquiry. Because of these interests, he has had the opportunity to include his students in many authentic scientific research projects in cooperation with world-renowned scientists. He has presented at state and national conventions and led professional development opportunities in his schools. Coffman has also worked with Advance Kentucky to train teachers and students across the state in preparation for advanced placement (AP) physics exams and was an AP physics I reader (grader) last year. He has been nominated for the Kentucky Teacher of the Year award by the Carter County School District.
