Clinical Practice Application Process
To apply for Clinical Practice, you must complete the following:
Submit your application one semester prior to the Clinical Practice Semester. The application period will be the first three weeks of the semester.
Complete the applicant survey. An email with the next steps will go out to each student.
Submit a program evaluation signed by your advisor by the end of the application period.
** Candidates are to indicate their top 3 placement preferences. NO candidate can be placed in a district where a relative or person who would be considered a conflict of interest is employed at the Central Office. NO candidate may be placed in a classroom, or same school building as a relative or conflict of interest. All students with a Secondary Education Certification or High School placement requirement may NOT be placed at the high school where they attended. If you have questions about this, please ask. Failure to communicate these scenarios will result in a cancellation of placement without guarantee of one that meets requirements.
Eligibility requirements for admission to clinical practice include the following:
- Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) is mandatory.
- Grade Point Average (GPA) and course work requirements:
- Candidate must have obtained a cumulative GPA of 2.75 (including transfer credit).
- All course work completed at Morehead State University must reflect an overall 2.75 GPA.
- Within the area of concentration, major(s), academic component(s), and professional education coursework, the candidate must have a minimum GPA of 2.75.
- ALL GPA requirements are based on a 4.0 scale.
- A minimum grade of “C” is mandatory for each course that requires clinical experience hours and for ALL TEP-restricted courses (those requiring TEP admission as a prerequisite).
- A minimum of ninety (90) semester hours must be successfully completed.
- A minimum of seventy-five (75) percent of course requirements, in area or teaching component(s) as required by the program, must have been successfully completed. This includes ALL methods courses.
- One semester (minimum 12 hours) must have been completed at Morehead State University prior to student teaching.
- Candidate must have a bona fide major for teacher certification (See Curriculum Standards ST-2).
- A minimum of 200 field experience hours and EPSB-selected categories must be completed prior to student teaching.
- Promoting Positive Behavior Training
- A background check and any other required checks must be completed, and a copy of the results given to the College of Education and district where the student is placed. Specific details to obtain your background check are given at the Clinical Practice Eligibility Review sessions during the application period.
- A new CAN Check is required for clinical practice. This new CAN Check must go through the Assessment Administrator's Office. Previous CAN checks will not be accepted.
PRAXIS
The PRAXIS II exams for certification in a candidate’s major are not required prior to Clinical Practice. However, students must still take and pass the appropriate PRAXIS II exams for their certification area to obtain teacher certification in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. That is, the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) expects your Praxis scores to be on file before you apply for your initial teacher certification. When registering for PRAXIS exams, candidates must request a copy of his/her scores be sent to Morehead State University’s Testing Center and to the Education Professional Standards Board-Kentucky.
