Facilities

The Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Imaging Sciences is housed in the College of Science and has more than 550 students enrolled in its graduate and undergraduate programs. The department offers students practical education and an opportunity to learn by doing in facilities that employ the latest technology and equipment.

Students who graduate from the Department of Kinesiology, Health and Imaging Sciences are prepared with both the knowledge and practical skills to give them an edge in a competitive job market. Students have hands-on learning opportunities at the following facilities:

KHIS Exercise Science Lab- The Exercise Science program provides numerous hands-on opportunities for learning basic health assessments such as resting heart rate and blood pressure, as well as a number of ways to measure cardiovascular health, flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, fitness and body composition. Students have the opportunity to use technologically advanced equipment including ParvoMed and Cosmed metabolic systems, various strength/endurance dynamometers, Quinton ECG units and an ERGOS Work Simulator. The ERGOS is an apparatus used to simulate the physical demands of various vocations as well as for physical evaluation and rehabilitation, and we have one of only a handful of such machines in the country.

Center for Health, Education and Research- All imaging sciences classes are conducted in the Center for Health, Education and Research (CHER). The state-of-the-art facility uses the latest imaging technology to give you an education that will put you on the cutting edge in the job field.

Experiential Learning

KHIS students receive real-world experience in a variety of settings. Students can become a group fitness class instructor or personal fitness trainer at the University's Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) through work-study and internship programs. Exercise science students complete internships in corporate or clinical settings that prepare them for the business world or physical therapy school. Health Promotion internships are offered in hospital settings, health departments, community health centers, corporate settings and YMCAs to mention a few. Our students work with real clients before they graduate, giving them the first-hand knowledge and experience employers seek today.

Center for Health, Education & Research

The Center for Health, Education & Research (CHER) building houses state-of-the-art equipment to provide students with quality instruction for classes and laboratories and to prepare them for clinical experiences. As a student, you will simulate imaging procedures in a controlled environment prior to performing them on live patients. Laboratories have videotaping capabilities, allowing students and faculty to evaluate performance. This also allows students to develop their skills and become more confident prior to their clinical assignments.

The CHER building also houses a testing and multimedia center that provides online testing and computerized instructional modules that enhance learning. These experiences will provide you with knowledge and confidence in preparation for national certification exams.

Imaging Sciences Laboratories

Radiologic Science Labs

The lab is equipped with three computed radiographic machines, imaging plates and computer imaging stations. Computerized imaging monitors allow the faculty and students to view images stored on the mini picture archiving and communication system from the computerized radiography rooms.

Patient care equipment includes:

  • Beds
  • Exam tables
  • Physical assessment equipment to teach skills
  • Mannequins for students to perform simulations

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Laboratory

The laboratory has five GE ultrasound machines, various anatomic phantoms and computerized monitors for the image reconstruction area. The modern equipment promotes academic excellence and student success by providing you the opportunity to develop clinical skills, demonstrate greater confidence and perform at higher levels during your clinical rotations.
