Student Financial Aid Timeline

• All students submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), using MSU School Code: 001976. This application allows individuals to apply for federal/state financial assistance, such as grants and federal loans.
• All students must complete a new FAFSA each academic year. FAFSA applications are available at the beginning of October. Students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA as close to October 1.
• Students need an FSA ID to log in and electronically sign the FAFSA. Independent students do not include parent information.
• Parents of dependent students also need an FSA ID to log in and electronically sign the student's FAFSA.

The MSU Office of Financial Aid begins processing FAFSA applications (for all students). Through their MSU email account, all students will receive an email informing them that their school’s financial aid office has received their FAFSA.

All students – MSU online scholarship application opens.

All students – may register for winter sessions. For more information, visit www.moreheadstate.edu/winter.

Winter sessions may be paid for using a portion of the student’s spring financial aid. For more information, please contact finaid@moreheadstate.edu.

Please note: MSU scholarships are awarded for fall and spring classes only and do not cover winter classes.

The MSU Office of Financial Aid will send official award notifications to first-time freshmen only.

First-time freshmen who have already submitted their FAFSA and completed any outstanding financial aid requirements should begin checking their MSU email account for an official offer letter notification.

All students should review and evaluate their financial aid offer letter and, if desired, accept any resources offered on the MyMoreheadState account to help meet the cost of attending MSU. If a federal student loan is needed, three steps are required:

1. Accept the Award on your MyMoreheadState account.
2. Complete Entrance Counseling on the Federal Student Aid website.
3. E-sign the Master Promissory Note on the Federal Student Aid website.

First-time Freshmen — Deadline to apply for the George M. Luckey, Jr. Honors Scholarship.

Continuing students’ Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) status (for the next applicable semester) is evaluated after the fall semester grades have been posted. Students not making Satisfactory Academic Progress will be notified.

Graduating students – Congratulations on your graduation! If you have student loans, make sure you complete loan exit counseling. 

Continuing students: Students selected for verification can submit their documents to KHEAA Verify for the new academic year.

New students: Students selected for verification can submit their documents to KHEAA Verify for the new academic year once they have attended a Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) event. SOAR is a one-day program where students register for classes, have their photos taken for their EagleCard (student ID), sign up for a meal plan, and complete tasks to prepare for their first semester.

Get info about summer financial aid if you're taking summer classes. Please note: MSU Scholarships are awarded for fall and spring classes only and do not cover summer classes.

All students should begin reporting all outside scholarship awards to the MSU Office of Financial Aid at finaid@moreheadstate.edu. Please include the student’s name, MSU ID number, who the scholarship is from, the amount of the scholarship, and which terms the scholarship should be applied to.

Example: Jane Doe, M0000000, The Southwest Onyx Scholarship, $5,000, $2,500 each semester.

Scholarship Application

• Students can view fall semester charges on Self-Service through their MyMoreheadState account.
• Parents of first-time freshmen dependent students may apply for a Federal Direct Parent Loan (PLUS). If credit is approved for the PLUS Loan, the parent must e-sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN) at studentaid.gov. If an endorser (co-signer) is required, the parent must complete PLUS Credit Counseling at studentaid.gov, and the endorser must complete the Endorser Addendum.

• Students will need to accept or decline offered loans and federal work-study funds. 
• Review the checklist (under your Self-Service Financial Aid) to ensure you have completed all requirements for financial aid.
• The student should review their Self-Service Student Finance account and select the current year. Students should complete their Financial Agreement as soon as possible. The deadline to complete this process is on the last day to add/drop classes (one week after classes begin).
• Accepted financial aid awards will show as a credit towards the student’s outstanding balance and can be considered when determining any remaining amount the student may owe except for work-study.
• Students should set up a direct deposit option on their Student Finance Self-Service account. This will be used for both work-study payments and refund disbursements (if applicable). Students only need to set up direct deposit once unless they change their banking information.

New & Transfer Students: Once students have made their school selection, they should notify other schools that they will not be attending their school and remove that school from your FAFSA application.

Students should review their Self-Service Student Finance account and select the current year. Students should complete their Financial Agreement as soon as possible. The deadline to complete this process is on the last day to add/drop classes (one week after classes begin).

• The first weekly disbursement cycle begins, and the first round of residuals is released.
• First-time freshmen should expect a 30-day delay in loan disbursements per Federal Regulations.
• Students whose disbursement of aid exceeds the total charges on the account may receive a residual (refund).
