Heating & Water Treatment Facilities

Morehead State University produces its own high-quality drinking water, and steam for heat, to over 40 academic buildings, administrative buildings, and residence halls, representing over 2.6 million square feet. Steam is generated by two 900 horse-power Superior-brand, natural-gas-fired boilers. The steam is fed through a tunnel system that passes underneath U.S. Route 60, and then branches out to feed campus buildings. Part of the tunnel system runs beneath sidewalks, helping to keep them free of snow and ice in inclement weather.

Morehead State's Water Treatment Plant provides over 10 million gallons of potable water to the main campus, annually. Water supplies include Triplett Creek, which is adjacent to the plant, as well as the University's Eagle Lake, located on the main campus.
