Admission Requirements

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics offers exceptional high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to finish high school while earning up to two years of college credit. Students will take college-level Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses, in addition to electives in the arts and humanities.

Craft Academy students live on the campus of Morehead State University in a residence hall specifically designed for high school-aged students. You will get the full college experience by taking classes, eating in the University’s dining halls and interacting with MSU students on a daily basis. Academy acceptance is limited to 74 students per year.

Requirements

Students who wish to attend the Craft Academy must meet certain requirements and apply for the program. Students are selected based on ACT score, academic grades from their first two years of high school, interest in advanced STEM careers, responses to application essay questions, interview by the Academy Selection Committee and recommendations from teachers and others who can attest to the student’s need and preparedness for the program. NOTE: Students are only allowed to apply to the Craft Academy once a year.

To be eligible to attend the Craft Academy, you must:

  • Be a current resident of the state of Kentucky
  • Be a high school sophomore
  • Complete Geometry, Algebra and Algebra II by the end of your sophomore year
  • Score a minimum ACT score of 18 in English, 22 in reading, and 22 in math

Required supplemental materials include:

  • Official high school transcript
  • ACT score
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be written by school personnel and at least one written by a community member. The third can be a person of the applicant's choice.
  • Five essay responses

Letters of Recommendation

Letters of Recommendation can be submitted a few different ways:

  • You may submit them as part of your supplemental items packet
  • The author of the letter can email an attachment to craftacademy@moreheadstate.edu
  • The author of the letter can mail a hard copy to:

Students applying to the Craft Academy will be selected on their high academic achievements as supported by GPA and ACT scores. Letters of recommendation provide additional information with regard to other skills and dispositions that would make this applicant a viable applicant for acceptance into this prestigious academy.

Categories the Selection Committee takes into consideration include, but are not limited to:

  • Academic achievement, awards, and honors
  • Student desire and expressed interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math careers
    Character (ethical and moral)
  • Service to the community
  • Perseverance
  • Demonstrated maturity and ability to transition from high school to independent living at a younger age
  • Additional talents that would likely add diversity to the Academy
