AFE Scholarship
The Appalachian Future Educators Scholarship supports students from Eastern Kentucky who plan to be educators.
ELIGIBLE RECIPIENTS
High school graduates who express the intention of pursuing educator preparation degrees or programs within Volgenau College are eligible. In the pilot, 22 students will be selected as scholarship recipients and program participants. To identify these students, the Volgenau College of Education Dean and AFE Scholars Program Director, in consultation with Morehead State Enrollment Services and the MSU Foundation, will work with P-12 school district leadership in the 22 counties within Morehead State University’s historical service region: Bath, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Floyd, Greenup, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Letcher, Lewis, Magoffin, Martin, Mason, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Pike, Rowan, and Wolfe.
One qualified student from each county will be identified and selected and receive a $1,000 annual scholarship. As long as recipients remain in good academic standing, continue toward completion of an educator preparation degree or program, and participate in AAFE Scholars program requirements, the scholarship will be renewable up to three times.
This scholarship is funded through the MSU Foundation. The application's preferred deadline is April 30.
You will need to apply via our foundation scholarships application (it will be available in January 2024).
The following applicant characteristics guide recommendations for the selection of recipients:
REQUIRED
- Interest in (and subsequently continued pursuit of) an educator preparation degree or program housed within the Volgenau College of Education
- From MSU’s identified service region
- Commitment to teach in MSU’s identified service region
PREFERRED
- High School GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Evidence of leadership potential
- First-generation college student
- From an underrepresented minority group
- Financial need (e.g., Pell Grant recipient)
Final selections will be made to ensure, to the extent possible, the full representation and diversity of the potential recipient pool with consideration to the slate of current scholarship recipients. The final candidates will be verified by the Office of Financial Aid as financially eligible and alerted to their award as outlined in the MSU Foundation Scholarship Awarding policy.
Recipients of AFE Scholarship funds are recognized as “Appalachian Future Educators (AFE) Scholars.”
The AFE Scholarship is “stackable,” meaning funds awarded may be added to other Morehead State scholarships up to the full cost of attendance. Students will receive $1,000 per year.
