ADMISSION FAQ

Learn more about admission to grad school - the process, forms and requirements.

To change graduate programs, you will need to complete another graduate application and select the new program you would like to apply to. If you’ve already paid the $30 application fee, you will not have to pay the fee again. You will not need to submit official transcripts or test scores again if you’ve already submitted them. Be sure to check the admission requirements for the new program you’re applying to begin.

Admission to graduate study is granted to students who meet the academic requirements and who hold a baccalaureate degree from an institutionally accredited institution of higher education, and to certain qualified MSU seniors. A one-time nonrefundable $30 application processing fee is required.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on the baccalaureate degree awarding final transcript or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on the master's degree awarding final transcript for those who have completed a previous master's degree from n institutionally accredited institution of higher education is required.

However, some programs require a higher GPA. Contact the department of your major to obtain the minimum score. Minimum scores on the GRE, GMAT or MAT are established by program. Students who do not have the minimum test scores but who demonstrate exceptional scholarly activity and/or research, or the potential for quality work as evidenced by a high GPA may appeal to the appropriate department chair or program director.

All graduate students will be limited to 12 graduate credit hours unless they are unconditionally admitted to a graduate program. Once unconditionally admitted, the student will be responsible for completing program requirements. Departments may drop students from unapproved courses.

All programs allow conditional admission up to 12 hours pending the testing requirement as long as the other admission requirements are met EXCEPT Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Science in Psychology and Master of Science in Space Systems.

All admission requirements for the MBA, MAT, and MSPSYC must be fulfilled and unconditional admission granted before students in those programs can register for classes.

Some programs will waive the testing requirement if the student has already earned a master’s degree or if the student maintains a 3.5 or higher GPA after the first 12 hours in the program.

For a list of all program admission requirements, see the Graduate Catalog.
