WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH A B.F.A. DEGREE

A Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art prepares you for a range of careers in museums, curation, galleries and other arts venues. The art education concentration prepares you for a career as a P-12 art teacher in the state of Kentucky. Our graduates have gone on to earn Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in disciplines such as painting, ceramics, graphic design, animation, printmaking, and photography and achieve success in master's programs such as entertainment technology, art administration, art therapy and historic preservation. You will also develop in-demand skills, such as oral and written communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and professionalism.

What makes Morehead State's Program Different

Our faculty are professional artists who exhibit nationally and regionally and who are engaged with the local arts community. You’ll get hands-on experience creating, teaching, and designing art.

ADMISSION TO THE B.F.A. PROGRAM

The first step is admission to Morehead State University, see MSU's admission requirements.

Our Bachelor of Fine Arts programs have special admission requirements:

You may apply for the BFA program during your sophomore year. Before applying, you must have completed between 21-36 credit hours in ART or be enrolled in select art courses.

You must have achieved (and must maintain if accepted into the BFA program) a 3.0 GPA in your art and design coursework and a 2.5 GPA overall to apply for admission and submit work for the Portfolio Application Review Day. (Students are no longer allowed to apply for admittance into the BFA program once they have surpassed 36 credit hours in art and design coursework).

APPLICATION PROCESS

You may apply to our BFA programs in either the fall or spring semester of your sophomore year. Portfolio Application Review Day is held once per semester:

  • Fall semester: the third week of October
  • Spring semester: the third week of April

To apply, complete a pre-registration form and submit it to the Art and Design office (211 Claypool-Young Art Bldg.and submit your portfolio application. Students have two attempts to apply to the BFA program; if a student is not admitted to the BFA program after two attempts, he or she will be admitted to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) program.

PORTFOLIO APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Application form (available in the Art and Design office - 211 Claypool-Young Art Bldg.)
  • 10-12 pieces of artwork completed in MSU Art and Design courses; include at least one piece from each art or design course. Independent work is acceptable, as long as it was completed while at MSU.
  • All work must be matted and, if produced digitally, printed. Original 3D work should be included whenever possible. If original 3D work is unavailable, photographic documentation (printed and matted) is required. Time-based work (video or animation) may be uploaded to a viewable site (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) or included on a flash drive for review.
  • A one-page statement about your work and why you are applying to the BFA program.
  • A printed copy of your Program Evaluation.

All programs in Art & Design are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
