DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE TUITION ASSISTANCE REFUND POLICY
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PERSONNEL TUITION ASSISTANCE REFUND PROCESS
"Department of Defense Personnel using Tuition Assistance (TA) from their branch of service will have any unearned TA funds returned to their branch of service on a proportional basis through at least the 60 percent portion of the period for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned to the respective branch of service based upon when a student stops attending (withdrawal from, dropping the course, or ceasing to attend).”
Refund calculations apply to any student who is attending this institution and withdrawals within 60% into the period of enrollment for which the student has received TA. Once a student has completed more than 60% of the period of enrollment, all of their assistance has been earned (by the school) and will be retained by the university.
In the event that a service member must withdraw from a course due to deployment or activation, MSU will work with the student to refund 100% of the TA to his or her branch of service provided proper documentation (military orders) is provided to the Department of Military Initiatives.
Examples of TA Return are shown below:
4-WEEK COURSE (EXAMPLE 1) WITHDRAWAL SUBMITTED:
- before or up to day 6 = 100% return
- day 7-13 = 75% return
- day 14-16 = 40% return
- day 17-28 = 0% return
8-WEEK COURSE (EXAMPLE 2) WITHDRAWAL SUBMITTED:
- before or during weeks 1 = 100% return
- during week 2 = 75% return
- during weeks 3-4 = 50% return
- during weeks 5 = 40% return
- during weeks 6-8 = no return
16-WEEK COURSE (EXAMPLE 3) WITHDRAWAL SUBMITTED:
- before or during weeks 1–2 = 100% return
- during weeks 3–4 = 75% return
- during weeks 5–8 = 50% return
- during weeks 9–10 = 40% return
- during weeks 11–16 = no return
*Return of TA funds for courses not shown (if any) will be calculated using: #days attended/#days of course length=percentage attended. 100 minus percentage attended equals the percentage of unearned tuition to be returned (to the branch of service) unless withdrawal occurs after 60% of course length. At that point 100% of the tuition will be considered as earned and retained by the university as allowed by DoD Instruction.
